Listen App Portfolio Summary
Music-Powered Mental Wellness
Listen is a comprehensive mental health application that harnesses the therapeutic power of music to help young adults manage anxiety and depression. Unlike traditional music platforms or generic mental health apps, Listen creates a seamless bridge between music therapy and emotional wellbeing through intelligent personalisation and quick-access features.
The Challenge
Many young adults use music to regulate their emotions, but existing platforms create decision fatigue with overwhelming choices and lack mental health focus. Meanwhile, mental health apps often feel clinical and don't incorporate music effectively. Listen addresses this gap by creating an experience that feels supportive rather than overwhelming.
My Approach
I conducted extensive user research, creating detailed personas of target users like Freya (student) and Sam (bricklayer) who struggle with anxiety.
Their feedback revealed key pain points:
–Difficulty finding appropriate music when feeling anxious
–Overwhelming options in traditional music apps
–Inconsistent use of mental health apps
–Need for quick access during emotional emergencies
Through competitive analysis of platforms like Spotify, Calm, and Insight Timer, I identified opportunities to blend the best aspects of music and meditation apps while solving their limitations.
Key Features
Emergency-First Design: Prominent "Emergency Play" button for immediate access during anxiety episodes
Mood-Based Personalisation: AI-powered playlists tailored to current emotional states and goals
Seamless Integration: Music and meditation features naturally combined with breathing exercises
Physiological Integration: Wearable device connectivity to track heart rate and optimise recommendations
Comprehensive Analytics: Visual mood tracking that helps users understand their emotional patterns
The Result
Listen offers a non-clinical, welcoming approach to mental health through a clean, intuitive interface that prioritises quick access and reduced cognitive load. The app adapts responsively between mobile and desktop platforms while maintaining visual cohesion and feature parity.
User testing confirmed the effectiveness of the design, with participants praising the authentication flow, core music features, and mental health integration. The project demonstrates my ability to apply user-centred design principles to solve complex problems at the intersection of technology and wellbeing.
